I once fell with my D2h, a 80-200 f/2.8, Gitzo tripod.
Walking out at a wildlife refuge, I was watching trees for owls. I missed a puddle minus the water...or I didn't miss it, rather. Twisted my ankle, landed on the tripod, snapped a leg in half, and the camera went slam.
My hand interfered, so I got bloodied a little, while the remnant shock of the fall, hit the camera and lens. The resulting damage was in the mounting ring and the back of the lens.
Both went to the shop and came back fixed. A new, beefier Gitzo resulted.
It was like $1,200 for both.
