What you are describing is the normal behavior. To see the exposure scale in any of the auto modes, you need to set the camera to shoot at a non-zeroed meter, like a +/-EV or bracketing. Your D300 should have behaved this way, too.

Check your "easy exposure compensation" settings in the Custom Settings B section. This might have some effect on the meter display, maybe.
