I still think the whole need of fast cards is a bit overblown. It has an impact, but not a large one. I'm doing much the same - using CF cards, but using them at a slower speed and bigger.

For those interested, here are comparisons I just made.

Lossless compressed, 14 bit, time to buffer full (first slow shot, counting the first slow shot):

XQD (32G H) - 76
Lexar 1000x (16G) - 71 shots
Sandisk 60mbs (64G, 400x) - 67
Sandisk + XQD in Backup mode - 61

If you do the math, it says that the difference in speed of the Sandisk 60mbs card and the 1000x (supposedly near 90MB/s) comes out to an effective 10MB/s.

The XQD I/O system is faster in the D4, since despite card speed that is slower, the XQD is faster by about 14MB/s than the 1000x.

I then timed the time to green light off to get actual write speed:

XQD (76 images) = 19 seconds = 80MB/s
1000x CF (71 images) = 21 seconds = 68 MB/s

This compares to Ron Galbraith's numbers of 90MB/s and 61MB/s.

The I/O system is still the real limiting factor. You do get more speed out of increasingly faster cards (and XQD vs. CF), but it's not much performance for quite a lot more money as you get over about 60MB/s in card speed.

But Thank you Nikon for a very nice, large buffer. That's the saving grace.
