Hi Les,

Make sure the back of your hand is not accidentally resting on the big lens release button on the left front of the camera.

Even if it is barely touching this, the camera will think you are trying to remove the lens and AF will be disabled. This happened to me many times when I used my D3s until I read about it and figured out what was happening.
