Hi Les,

The usual cause is oxidized electrical contacts on the camera body annd / or the lens. You might want to try using DeOxit to clean the contacts. It is available at Radio Shack.
You might want to cycle the AF mode switch on both the camera and the lens back and fourth a few times.
