I agree with the views expressed above, but whether your potential purchase is good value is something only you can really answer

I used a D700 for some time for theatre and wildlife shoots, and was pretty happy... but then I acquired a D3s and the improvement was very noticeable.

To me, the high-ISO performance seems better by at least one stop, and the autofocus performance is significantly faster and more reliable, particularly in low light and with things like birds in flight. I also find the second card slot useful, since I can use it in "backup" mode to provide a contingency against card failure.
