If you read their statements carefully it's always to the effect "we have no plans to produce a XQD". Their statement always talks about present tense and makes no mention that they won't ever produce one.
And secondly once CF sales start to crater, which likely has already started a year or two ago, SanDisk will be looking for other business.
Either way this battle goes, CF is dead. Which is why I was disappointed that the new rigs at Photokina weren't thick with XQD. But they weren't thick with CF-Fast either. Issuing a new camera at this point with CF is a bad move because your brand-new cam contains an obsolete tech that is going to get harder to buy.
