The DX crop uses less of the sensor and gives you a smaller area to shoot in. The exact opposite of what you are trying to battle. Given what you say you WANT to do, the D800 makes perfect sense. And it's fundamentally the same reason I bought it and not the D4. I get to put a whole lot more pixels on my subject.
