I think the point is that using DX Crop Mode won't really buy you much in that situation - if, as you say, the file size is not an issue for you.

Look at it this way - with fast-moving aircraft in flight, it can be difficult to keep them in frame at the best of times. Reducing the frame to DX just makes it harder. Staying with the FX image size means you have more room for error, and can crop afterwards to the best framing anyway
