No, it's not. The grip makes the camera LONGER. But it does NOTHING if your hands are large. Additionally, all the buttons and controls are sized for a small camera unlike the large bodies. It's a bit like having to keep a firm grip on a tennis ball versus a golf ball for an hour. Or more correctly, holding a golf club tightly for an hour versus a baseball bat.
If you don't have big hands, you won't notice, but if you do it's all you can think about after 15 minutes of shooting. My fingers actually went numb trying to hold my D7000 for a half of college soccer. I couldn't even eject the card for a few minutes as I didn't have the dexterity. The D800 improves this. But for full games, or multiple games, It's the big body or I can't shoot it without serious pain.
