I'm sorry to post a rant thread because I just try to avoid this kind of thing, but Nikon is KILLING me here...
For any of you that know me or my posts, you know I love the large pro bodies. I have massive hands. The big bodies fit my hands and allow me to shoot comfortably for hours. The smaller and medium sized bodies just introduce different levels of "hurt" to my day.
I shoot two primary things. Sports and Studio (fashion, and beauty). All I've wanted from Nikon for the past couple of years is 2 cameras.
1. A sports camera like the D3s with 20-24MP or a DX sensor. 2. A studio camera with high MP that didn't cost me as much as a move to MF
Nikon gives me the D7000. Terrific DX sensor, in a body so small my hands hurt after 20 minutes of use on a monopod with my 300/2.8. It has 2 SD slots. It has less MP than the entry level Canon did 2 years previous. I bought it anyway. It's since been moved to studio duty or remote duty for sports.
Nikon gives me the D4. Not quite enough MP. A new card format that seems to be on shaky ground. No ISO improvement over my D3s. A fairly steep cost of entry. So I pass on this.
Nikon gives me the D800. A medium sized body with the best sensor imaginable in the wrong body. I pick it up anyway thinking it will be my studio solution. But now I use it for sports more than anything.
Nikon gives me the D600. A sensor I would LOVE to see in a D4s. And they put it in an even SMALLER body than the D800. No, I won't go there.
Nikon gives me the Nikon 1 system. Tiny camera with a great crop sensor. I can take off my extenders and retire my long, heavy glass. It shoots 10fps, but sensor noise is about where my D2x is. Ok, fair enough. And then.... it has no normal hotshoe, no 10-pin connection, no PC terminal, and no remote capability AT ALL. It happily takes my AF-S, AF-D, and even AI/AIS glass. But it won't do AF-C with any of them. I bought it anyway.
WHAT THE H*** ARE THEY DOING?! Am I really asking too much? I would gladly pay $5k tomorrow for a D4 body with a D800 sensor in it. I would pay $4k for a D4 body with a D3200 sensor in it. It CAN NOT be this hard.
I have a D2h, D2x, and a pair of D3s. I would sell any or all of them and move forward if there was anywhere for me to go. But there isn't.
...sorry folks, I just had to let that out, and pray that someone at Nikon MIGHT read it.
