Sorry, I am still asking the question badly.

My understanding is tracking starts with a specific sensor. So I begin by placing the selected sensor on an object, and hitting AF-ON or half-shutter.

Now if the object moves (in AF-C and Dynamic mode) to an adjacent sensor, so long as it is in the 9 or 21 selected (or 51 I guess), it focuses then using that sensor.

So if I start in the center, and the subject moves one point to the right it focuses one point to the right, but if the subject moves 2 points to the right (in 21 point mode) it now focuses on that focus point well off where I started. If it moves to a 3rd point to the right (in 21 point mode now out of range) it ceases to follow that object, and refocuses on the center point again and whatever is there.

Right?

My question is what happens between shots -- it clearly stops following as the mirror moves. When the mirror returns for the instant between shots -- does it pick up where it left off, say 2 spots to the right of where it was manually placed?

Or does it reset and start tracking again from the middle?

The answer SEEMS obvious, that it should pick up where it left off. Does it?

I assume all the tracking modes must remember their state between (continuous) exposures?

Thank you.
