"RE: D4 AF-C Modes"

I was playing with this the other day, forcing an out of focus condition, and the hesitation when in Focus + release on the first shot is noticeable, but very small. Has anyone seen it documented on what it is, is there a time limit, does it run the whole focus range (so it depends on lens focus speed)? If you want to see its (presumably) worst case, just aim at something too close, and fire off a burst.

Other than "focus" I confess I have not seen a lot of difference in use, but I settled on Focus + release primarily inertia from cameras that did not have Release + focus. Frankly it focuses fast enough I never see a problem in that regard -- the vast majority of out of focus images I get are because the darn camera was pointing where the focus was not on the action -- bad camera. Point in the right direction next time.
