My son invited me to a rodeo, my first, to watch his girl friend rope and ask me to bring along my camera and "big" lens to get some shots of her. Of course I was glad to bring it and take my first action night shots with the D4. The rodeo was on a very dark night and the lighting was very poor. The entire arena was lit by 4 street lights. Taking test shots I saw that I was going to need at least 1/250 at f/4 to stop any of the action. After viewing the pictures 1/250 wasn't fast enough. I wanted the pictures to show the action, but most of them are a little blurry. I set the ISO on auto and let it go where it may. All of the following shots were shot with a 200-400 f/4 at 200 f/4 and are at iso 36,204. Other than cropping and a little adjustment with the clarity slider in LR4 these are straight out of the camera. Given the shooting conditions I thought they turned out surprisingly good. A better lens choice for this setting and conditions would have been a 70-200 f/2.8 but I don't own one of those.
