While I can't comment on the orientation or appearance of the D3 slot (I have only the D300 and the D4) I should point out that there is some resistance in the D4 to CF card insertion the wrong way. If you are a bit belligerent like I was when I damaged my D4 then you can successfully insert the card the wrong way. I think I wiggled the card a bit when I did the deed and that helped propel the card into the slot. If the user is at all heavy handed the CF card most definitely can be inserted. I am living proof of that. Perhaps if there are enough knotheads out there like myself Nikon might slightly redesign the portal to prevent incorrect CF card insertion. It is a most expensive thing to do and it will probably resonate with my soul for the rest of my days. I feel like a real dummy for having done it.
Bob, enjoy your D4 when it arrives. It is the most remarkable camera I have ever had the pleasure of learning to use. I hope that some day I can live up to it's capabilities.
