Hi Mike,

The stills captured from any HD enabled DSLR will be in the neighborhood of 2mp's, generally.

These can translate well in JPG depending on the lighting, closeness to subject etc. but, are in no way a substitute as you indicate for a RAW file capture.

Currently, RED, Canon, Black Magic design and others are building cameras where a still can be rendered out as a larger raw file.

What shutter speed are you using for capture?

If the take becomes one of "those" moments, pressing the shutter release should take you back to stills mode and NEF etc. (I believe).

The conditional impediments, is why I use the D3S alongside the D800/D7000 just in case.
