Type I cards may be more expensive because they need to use smaller (latest technology) memory chips to provide the same capacity as the Type II cards. In an equivalent Type II card, the company may be able to cram more of last year's memory chips into the slightly larger space, keeping manufacturing costs lower.

Type I and Type II cards are equally fragile... their casings are probably the same thickness.
