I purchased the D800 & was determined not to get the D4 but after cancelling my original order put my name back on the list only to determine that when D4 came in-I would pass on it. I received a call this week that it had arrived so went over just to "look" at it but instead it followed me home!
Now, my head is swimming w/ should I sell the D800, keep the D800 for studio work, was the D4 a mistake & the list goes on. Was hopeful by the end of this thread I would have come to a clear conclusion but only feel more uncertainty.
I want the D800 for the same reasons as you but the D800 has left me cold in how controlled I need to shoot in order to get the same results I do w/ the D700- if I only kept the D800 I would say gone are the carefree shoots. The minute I used the D4 & looked at the images I knew that I wanted to own it. I shoot low light & some sports in addition to the others you mentioned. I just don't feel I could get the same images w/ the D800 so am wanting to own both-Great Marketing on Nikon's part- LoL!
I think that the D800 & D4 are just different enough from one other that I might be able to justify keeping both. If I could only have one the D4 would win hands down- it has an X factor that can not be explained & yet I can not seem to let the D800 go- Thanks Nikon for messin w/ my head!!!
Art is the only way to run away without leaving home.
