I followed half of Nikon's recommendation and turned off the color histogram in image review. I use the "blinkies" a lot so I left the highlights warning on. So far it has fixed the problem. I shot about 500 exposures at a little league baseball game yesterday and had no problems. I expect Nikon to fix it with the first firmware update.
When it did occur in the past, I just pulled the battery out for a couple of seconds and went back to shooting. But I don't know if I lost any images that I shot but didn't get written to the memory card. If that happened, it's not obvious that I lost any images.
Has anyone determined if you lose images when the camera freezes - like maybe the last image shot before the freeze? Obviously you have an opportunity loss for shots you can't take while the camera is "frozen".
