KJ, I to have experienced the same findings and can not justify 2000.00-2500.00 Over the cost of a low mileage used D3s. Just picked up a 45k count extremely Clean D3s ( just sold one of my D3s's a month ago in perpetration for my D4 ) Today and sent the D4 back to the dealer. The D4 had some great features , frills if you may and a great video system which I really don't use. The biggest plus for me was ISO 100 for the studio, which I'll take advantage of with a new D800. The D800 should be a great studio camera and generally a blast to experiment with. Still on the fence between the 800 and the 800e. ......so bottom line the D4 is a great camera, more so for the D700 and D3 people moving up...just not for me.
