"RE: He's at it again..."

I raised the same point recently, that digital vs. film debates are always digital camera vs. digital scanner debates. I wondered aloud how much better a slide-to-photopaper print might be than a scan-to-inkjet print. I got one reply--about the impracticality of home darkrooms and the poor quality of RC prints. I guess not one single Nikonian has ever compared a Cibachrome, or whatever the current version is, and a 4000dpi scan/inkjet print. And if you are suggesting quality prints from negatives, that one has been poo-pooed already, as well. Many film users have given up trying to find a lab that can consistently and dependably deliver high quality prints from film, slide or negative. That leads to the inevitable question "scanner or digicam?" There are those who adamantly contend that a 4000dpi scan of a slide (always Velvia or Provia, it seems...suggesting that digicams are already superior to scanned Kodak film?) beats the output of any digicam; yet it is intimated that achieving a high quality scan is a skill, a craft, an art, or all of the above. So it's not always a question of whether an image captured on film is theoretically superior to an image captured digitally; it's whether that superiority can be practically and economically maintained all the way to the final print. Many times it just is not going to happen.
