I agree with "...to try it yourself."

My advise would be to use the D1X at the lowest ISO settings always. Use higher only when it is a "MUST".
You pay for it,
1) Lower color saturation
2) Higher noise
3) Lower resolving power
...

I use my camera at ISO 125 (Lowest). In special situations I'll go up to ISO400.
Sport photographers and Some Nature Photographers use it up to even 800 ISO.

Do the test yourself, shoot the same subject at different ISO settings as NEF. Check the results at 100% res on screen and on print.

The reason I suggested NEF (Raw) and not JPEG is, if you have a JPEG workflow it might be more difficult to evaluate the results because of the lower resolving power of the format.
