How many images per memory card?

From a practical standpoint, when I shoot 'FINE' JPEG (x4 compression) in my Nikon D1, I get between 84 to 106 image files per 128 MByte (SanDisk) CompactFlash card.

The assumption you make is correct. '12x' and '16x' refer to the MAXIMUM transfer rate to/from card in units of 150KBytes. Thus '16x' denotes a transfer rate of 2.4MBytes/sec.
