I believe the problem is down to a difference in how the TTL modes work. The film cameras measure the exposure from the light reflected back off the film, while the D1 cameras use the pre-flash from the DX series units reflected off the shutter curtains immediately before the actual exposure is made.
I presume this rules out the older flashes because they can't issue the required pre-flash. Incidentally, this is why you can't use the SU-4 wireless slave with the D1 series: the pre-flash triggers it.
You should be able to use the non-DX flashes in 'A' mode where the sensor on the front of the flash controls the exposure.
