Keep in mind that with the 1.5 multiplier with the D1X, a 17mm lens on a Nikon digital camera is not like a 17mm on a film camera. On your digital camera, that 17mm is actually around a 25mm focal length. This is probably the main reason that Nikon came out with a 14mm Nikkor. It was released with a digital camera in mind. While it may be 14mm on your film camera, it is actually 21mm on your digital camera. On the upper end, a 300mm will actually be a 450 mm on a D1X.
