Tom Hogan would seem to disagree with you with his statement in "The Complete Guide to the D1, D1h and D1X" in which he says, "The D1 has slightly less exposure range than captured by most print film and slightly more exposure range than 35mm slides".
Moose Peterson in his book comes to approximately the same conclusion. Actually, I think he goes a bit further but I have not found his exact quote.
Granted both of these are about the D1 but I would think that it would equally apply to the D100. For what it's worth my limited experience would seem to bear their conclusions out.
