No, the D1x/h write images to the buffer in 'S' mode so you can take pictures as fast as you can work the release until you fill the buffer. Once the buffer is full you have to wait until at least one image is written to the memory card before you can start shooting again.

IIRC, the D1x has space for 9 JPEG or 6 RAW shots, while the D1h can do 40 JPRG or 27 RAW before you have to wait.

Unfortunately they both still have the problem where you can lose images if you switch the camera off while it's writing the buffer to the card: like the original D1, the x/h just complete writing the current image and power off, losing anything remaining in the buffer.
