I would try the DX 18-300 actually. or if you plan to ever go full frame the FX 28-300. That way you have one lens and your not stoppping to swap lenses all the time. You can go light and enjoy the days events easier than having a backpack full of glass to lug around, telling the kids, "wait, Dad has to change lenses!" Remember you can always rent it if you don't think you'd use it in your daily shooting style, and if you do like it, then you've tried it out first before dropping $1000.
