What Howard stated above is something I couldn't agree with more.
So I guess the answer to the OP query is that depending on where you live, and how the regional Nikon service department chooses to implement (or not implement) official policy, indeed owning a gray market lens could result in larger costs down the road if you are trying to get it serviced, even for a fee. Such concerns may in turn warrant a lower selling price on the used market.
