Interesting comment on the "refusal to deal" issue with independent repair shops. This happened in the photocopier business years ago. The result was a successful anti-trust action. The distributor (Nikon USA) is probably under instructions to keep doing this until the heat is turned up. Remember that Japanese companies do not come from a culture of respect for competition legislation. They have operated in a culture of keiretsu.
Unfortunately consumer complaints will fall on deaf ears, complaints to the FCC or its sister organizations including attorneys general by the repair shops and professional photographers will have give rise to action.
