I find the 80-400mm focuses just fine for aircraft (prop & jet) on a D7000. There is probably a couple of photos in my gallery with the 80-400mm. However...

You will only be gaining 60mm by going to the 80-400mm - I do not think that the extra 60mm would be worth the cost.

Smaller airshows are ususally quite a bit closer to the aircraft than major air shows. Your lens and TC may very well be all you need for your air shows. I'd try that combination before making any lens buying decisions.
