I have used the 18-200 VR for several years with D70 and D200 camera bodies on several European trips. This is a very decent lens and you should be able to get good results. On a River Cruise, a 200mm focal length is very useful and you should also bring a polarizing filter. The 18-200 performs much better at smaller apertures. My particular copy is best between 24mm to about 200mm and the weakest performance is at the wide end. Therefore,I usually complement this lens with a Tokina 12-24/4 which currently costs around $400.
