I think you have been given some very good advice.
What you need to realise is that bigger the range of focal lengths in a zoom len ( for example an 18-200 ) the more compromises in the quality of the picture.
If you are just making 5x7 prints the differences in zooms would be almost impossible to see. On bigger prints you will start to see the pictures may not be razor sharp and the colors not quite as contrasty as you might like. If you are not ultra fussy then the 18-200DX will be an excellent. I would suggest a used one the 18-200 VRII.
I started out with one but as I got more involved I went with faster more expensive lens. The down side is cost and they are bigger/heavier. Have a great trip
