The second image looks fine to me - I don't think you have anything to worry about with your 17-55mm, if that lens was used for this shot.

I always need to apply some sharpening to my NEF images - even those shot with the 70-200mm f/2.8 VR II

Edited to add... in case this post doesn't seem to make sense, be aware that Vlad has since removed the two example images from his previous post
