It's been quite a while since I've owned one. I'm less concerned about my memory, rather I'm more concerned that my skills weren't nearly as good when I was using it a lot.
I recently looked at some of the files from that lens, and they were generally speaking not that impressive. I've reprocessed some of them using current technique and software, so I'm not too bothered by the distortion. It wasn't that bad in the first place, and it's easily corrected, at least by LR4.
I never used it on FX digital, only film and DX. The corners on film are distinctly soft wide open, but improve nicely stopped down a little. I probably wouldn't recommend this on FX digital, because of the corners, but on DX, it's a pretty good lens. It isn't, however, all that much better than more readily available and less expensive lenses like the 18-55, and in fact might not actually be better.
If you're after a lower priced ultra-wide for FX, I'm more inclined to point folks at the Tokina 17-35/f4 or the Tokina 16-28/f2.8.
