I owned the 80-400 and I currently own a 300mm f4 AF-S. I can tell you that the 80-400 is not even in the same league as the 300mm f4. The VR for me is not even a factor. I rarely use it on any of my lenses that have it.
I sold my first 300mm f4 and missed it so much I bought another. I get consistent repeatable results in very demanding situations. Something the 80-400 failed and was miserable to use. I detest it. But I also hate the 18-200 so you be the judge.
I never got a good photo from either of those but I get spectacular results from both of the 300mm F4 lenses I've owned.
Let me show you some examples. especially the action shots. My 80-400 would have fell flat on its face. The 300mm f4 AF-S is sorely underrated. It's in my opinion the best lens for the price that Nikon sells.
