The Nikkor 80-400 is plenty sharp between 80-330mm's for me. At 400 it's very good if stopped down to f8. If you are gonna shoot BIF (ie;smaller fast birds) I'd get the Sigma 50-500 for it's quicker AF or for the best sharpness get a Nikkor 300/4 and a 14TC which is what I'd opt for.
