You need to enter non-CPU lens data in the setup menu when mounting manual focus lenses. You will only be able to enter one focal length and f stop. Until you do this the camera won't recognize the lens.

I know the 50 to 300mm is manual focus but what lens is the 70-210mm?

Read page 196 in the D300 manual. If you don't have the manual you can download it from the Nikon USA site.
