Interesting thread with some valid points. I totally "get" why some folks simply must have 2.8 or more, if you need it to get the shutter speed required to stop the motion, well you need it!
I've just picked up a copy of the 70-200mm F4 today completing the "Alternative Trinity" for me, having the 16-35 and 24-120 F4's already.
I do have the 70-200 2.8VRII which although awesome is too heavy for my my needs and will be sold (as was the 24-70mm 2.8 I used to own).
For me as an amateur I value the lighter weight kit without a decline in IQ of any practical measure.
Nikon has done us proud with the sensible options we now have, happy days!
The same has happened with the latest primes, with 1.4 and 1.8 options to keep every pro and budget conscious amateur very happy! Primes are my ultra low light solutions these days, plus real fun to leave the zooms at home sometimes let alone the awesome IQ.
