Don't know, whether my personal "lens buying history" is of interest to you: When I had the D70, I added the 70-200 to the 18-70 kit lens plus the excellent Tokina 12-24/4 for wide angles. When I got the D200 I exchanged the kit lens for the 24-70. The 24-70 is excellent on a DX camera, and I never missed the lack of vr, even with the poor high iso capabilities of the D200. After I got the D700 I sold the Tokina and bought the 14-24. In the past five years, I have seen no need to replace the excellent Nikon f/2.8 zooms, but have added three top level Zeiss prime lenses. I believe very much in planning ahead. By buying only the best lenses, you can "future proof" your equipment and probably even save money over the long run. By the way - I still have the D70 converted to IR with a 18-200vr lens; the D200 is my back up camera.
