I have used the 18-200 vr for quite a few years and I found it to be reasonable sharp over most of its focal range, especially when stopped down to f/8 or f/11. However, this lens has pretty bad distortions and I used DxO Pro to correct which vastly improved the results. There are factors aside from "sharpness" that affect the IQ that can be achieved with a lens such as color rendition and micro contrast. As a case in point - I have photographed sailboat races for several years using a D200 with either the 18-200 or the 70-200 and the results are quite different.
