I think most people get this lens as a vaction lens or a one size fits all solution. My use is primarily vaction, quick family outings where a lot of gear is not an options. I have a 70-200 f2.8 and it does take better pictures but is a pain to lug around if you don't have to and that's the reason the often criticized 18-200 is such a joy to use. I bought mine new in 05 and there weren't any other options! If buying today I'd take a look at the Sigma and save $$$.
