I'm with you there Alan. Have filters on 12 of my 15 lenses. Only the 14-24mm f2.8, 16mm f2.8, and 8mm f2.8 dont have protective filters.

My 300mm f2.8 AF-S, 500mm f4 AF-I, and 800mm f5.6 all have a glass plate/ filter on the front of the lens. Fitted at the factory.

I think Nikon knows whats best..
