"RE: 500mmVR Focus/Clarity Issues or not??? advice/opinions please!?"
Well obviously the tripod provides more support. But if you need optimum mobility, a monopod works well. The 500 f/4 is a big lens but not too big to use with a monopod. Personally, I almost always use my tripod over a monopod. The weight difference is not that great since I have a relatively robust monopod. The biggest difference in weight is the Gimbal head, which is why some choose a Mongoose from 4th Generation Design over the Wimberley or RRS gimbal head. http://stores.4gdphoto.com/-strse-Tripod-Heads-cln-Mongoose-3-Series/Categories.bokEric BowlesNikonians TeamMy GalleryWorkshopsNikonians membership — my most important photographic investment, after the camera
