The biggest problem I see is your choice of aperture. This lens is sharpest at f/4, and while it is still good being stopped down, it does go downhill as you stop down. This is quite different than the behavior of typical kit lenses. If you had shot at f/4 or f5.6, the shutter speed would also have been much faster. While 1/1000s is generally ok for this lens, you can still get motion blur due to an unstable setup. Finally, the subject is too small, which can be a problem for the AF, and of course it also detracts from the overall result. Try to get closer next time.
Keep working on it, this lens is capable of much better results.
