While not perfect, that's not entirely true. The 35mm DX f/1.8 does work on FX with minimal vignetting, and typically when shot > 12'. Closer than 12' and it's non-existent and if you crop to 8 x 10 it's gone. This was taken on the D800, in FX mode with no cropping. Capture NX2 automagically took care of the vignetting, but is was maybe 2-3 stops darker on the very far corners when viewed in Aperture.

So, if you do move to FX your investment isn't a total loss.
