As a general reply I reckon everyone else around here will tell you to go with the 24-120mm F4 AFSVR as a GP lens on the D800, or use Zeiss primes (Lots of people don't read the original post properly and then go into raptures about how good their expensive Zeiss's and F1.4 Nikkors are! )

I'm usng a D600 at the moment that I think I'll keep but I do have a little experience of the D800 too so here goes...
I have borrowed a 24-120mm recently and did a weeks shooting in the English Lakes, testing it against the D600 "Kit" Lens, I've yet to do all the PP on the Pics because I'm tied up till after Christmas with looking after my 90 year old mum (Some things are more important than even Pixel Peeping (tongue firmly in cheek)! (Sample variation counts for a lot in reviewing) Take everything, including what I'm writing with a sackfull of salt.
Frankly I'm just not getting it, Yes the 24-120mm is better but not so much as to justify twice the street price! Various reviews of the 24-120mm F4 AFS Vr and the 24-85 F3.5-4.5 AFS Vr put the former as a bit better or similar depending on where you read it. A stellar review of the 24-120 can be found but there are equal reviews extolling the virtues of the 24-85, a good 24-85 will be as good or better than a bad 24-120 and vice versa I reckon. You gain and lose a little with Apertures which can matter depending on where you can stand the gains and losses to be, I feel the difference between the two is more down to the Nano coating than anything startling in lens design.
Also as Mick Klass pointed out to me in my previous thread on the two Lenses, you lose 35mm with the cheapie too! Thanks Mick
It also depends on your shooting method/style, personally I like a mix of both Zooms and Primes depending on my mood (Usually in one!) So the F1.8 Prime trinity of which you already own one may benefit you 28/50/85 AFS G? Get the wide now other later when funds allow? Coupled with your 50 and 70-200 they'd work well, however if you want a so called "Walk Around" (Growing to hate that term) You'll have to trade a little in optics for convenience, is Vr essential?
For me in a "Walk Around" it is, again convenience, as for me I have concluded that the 24-85mm AFS Vr, will do nicely for a travel lens coupled with a 70-300 AFS Vr and I'm happy since I already have it in the bag and it'll let me concentrate on building my primes up for real edge to edge quality when I need it, for it's price it can't be beat...
Everyone elses mileage may vary and accordingly I have retired to my Flame Proof chamber.
Cheers jules...
