I had a choice between a Tamron and the Nikon 105.
I ended up getting the Tamrom 90mm f2.8 but what I discovered that when near full extension it was f5.6 and the working distance (from front of lens to subject) was much less than what I liked plus it was not VR(VC). It was not much use without a tripod. The net is I did not get to same working distance and also lost on light and then no VR.
At this point, I would sacrifice real working distance to get light so will be looking if there is something better.
I obviously did not do enough research.
My 18-105 has been more practical at this point but just have to crop more since it does not get close to 1:1.
