To start with, I don't much about Macro shooting. But decided to get the 60mm Micro G model to shoot a bunch of product shots. And since my camera is DX, that 60mm would give me the equivalent FOV of a 90mm. So I could shoot macro and portrait. Whoopee!
The 90mm was one of my favorite lenses. Mine was a Leitz used with my Leica camera.
At the time of my purchase of my D7000 and the 60mm G, the camera guy congratulated me and then showed me the handsome Nikon brochure for the D3s model. All the images were taken with the 60mm G, and include a number of portraits.
The image quality is incredible. But if your purpose is primarily macro, the 60mm puts your lens awful close to the subject. Something longer might serve you better.
