Looking at Nikons MTF chart F4 vs 2.8 the contrast over the entire frame is better than the 2.8. Also sharpness is better wide open than the 2.8 @2.8, at f4 about the same. Unfortunately no one at this time has had hands on so It's all speculation at the moment. The 2.8 is a beast of a lens in weight and I for one do not like carrying the thing around attached to my D4. So If the new lens is anywhere as good as my 2.8 then that's the way I will be going. Each to their own.
